Oh so Pinterest-y!

Many of you are most likely familiar with the popular website PinterestFor those of you that have not heard of the website, it is a site in which people can find creative recipes, craft ideas, fashion tips and much, much more!

Pertinent quotes are uplifting and inspiring and personally, quotes help to propel me forward when I am having a discouraging day or time. One of my favorite past times is to find inspirational quotes relevant to what I am pursuing at the time.

Pinterest for most is a hobby, however the website can be used advantageously when attempting to lose weight, stay or get in shape. Many of us have heard and been told that we are a certain type of leaner.

Personally, I am a very visual person.

What Pinterest allows a person to do, is build a virtual inspiration or dream board. During my first year of college, one of my teachers assigned a dream board project. At the time the project was assigned, I saw it as a fun thing to do but never put much merit to what I could achieve by collectively putting my ideas in a visual manner.

It is easy to lose sight of goals due to the hectic life many of us lead. What a dream board or inspiration board accomplishes, is that of a constant reminder of what you want to do. Hence, you are made more personally accountable for your goals.

The way that I created my dream board in class was by using a poster board and cutting out pictures of what things I want to achieve. To date I have accomplished three things on my dream board.

This new way of creating a dream board via Pinterest is much easier and less time consuming than the way I accomplished my board.

A person first must sign up for the Pinterest website, but no worries it’s free! After signing up, you can choose to link your account to your Facebook account so that you can find friends and then look at what they have “pinned” on their Pinterest accounts.

After signing up and choosing whether or not to link it to your other accounts, you will be able to choose a few pictures out of a collection of pictures for which you respond most to. By choosing these pictures, the Pinterest website then attempts to show you more things that are analogous.

Moreover, Pinterest allows you, the user to create different “folders” to categorize your “pins.” Therefore you are able to create separate folders for things such as healthy recipes, workouts, splurge recipes and even inspirational quotes.

The idea might seem juvenile and pointless at first, but I beg you to attempt to give it a chance. Motivation and inspiration are the two most fundamental facets of continuing to stay on track.

Here is a snap-shot from my personal Pinterest account!

Holding yourself accountable by creating a visual board for which you can look back and see your accomplishments is advantageous. Moreover, as time passes you will most likely want to add to your board because you want to accomplish additional things.

“Always continue the climb. It is possible for you to do whatever you choose, if you first get to know who you are and are willing to work with a power that is greater than ourselves to do it.” – Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Eat THIS…NOT that

For all of you television fanatics the quote, “A moment on the lips, forever on the hips,” was said on  the very popular F.r.i.e.n.d.s series. This quote should be plastered in your mind while grappling with the holiday season’s tantalizing temptations.

The Halloween season is a particularly difficult time for any candy lover such as myself. Copious amounts of Tootsie Rolls, Snickers and Kit-Kat bars in every store can break down even the strongest person.

Instead of depriving yourself from all candy this Halloween season, there are “healthier” alternatives that will leave you feeling less guilty.

First off it’s important to see what makes the typical Halloween candy so bad.  Many people have the misconception that calories are the only thing to look at when determining whether or not to eat something. It is important to rather look at the breakdown, hence total fat, saturated fat, sugar, poly saturated and monounsaturated fats.

In the picture above, the Tootsie Roll Mega Mix is a prime example of how much sugar is packed into  Halloween candy. Based on a 2000 calorie diet, there are 140 calories in a single Tootsie Roll. Moreover, the breakdown of the 140 calories includes 20 grams of sugar.

The serving size for this bag of Laffy Taffy is 5 bars. For each serving size there are 150 calories and 21 grams of sugar.

According to the American Heart Association, “The statement says that most women should consume no more than 100 calories (about 25 grams) of added sugars per day.”

Being that a single Tootsie Roll had 20 grams of sugar, a woman would have almost eaten their daily intake for sugars.

For men, the American Heart Association states, “Most men should consume no more than 150 calories (about 37.5 grams) each day.”

Sugar is empty, meaning there is no nutritional value in it. Therefore, it is critical to not only look at the calories, but moreover the serving size and sugar per gram for the stated serving size.

In single piece of Dove Silky Smooth Pleasures Dark Chocolate, there are 170 calories. Our of the 170 calories there are 15 grams of sugar.

Don’t get discouraged, it isn’t all hopeless. Dark chocolate is a healthy alternative that tastes good as well. The benefits of dark chocolate far exceed other candy.

According to Readers Digest, “…dark chocolate contains flavonoids, which are compounds that act as antioxidants. Flavonoids protect cells from harmful molecules—called free radicals..”

It goes without saying, that moderation is key even when consuming such as dark chocolate.

However, the health benefits dark chocolate offers, such as reducing the risk of heart disease is enormous. Consuming dark chocolate is auspicious rather than consuming a  candy such as a Tootsie Roll with no advantageous health benefits.

The Skinny Cow brand is a fantastic alternative to traditional candy. The Dark Chocolate Dreamy Clusters contain 120 calories for 1 pouch and only have 9 grams of sugar per serving. The Milk Chocolate Heavenly Crisp have 110 calories per serving size, which is 1 bar. In each serving size there are a mere 9 grams of sugar.

There are tools available to those who want to help keep track of their sugar intake. Apps are indispensable when attempting to analyze what you are consuming each day.

MyFitnessPal is a free app that is also accessible online. You can track your exercise and food consumption simultaneously, therefore allowing you to see the totality of each day’s food intake.

According to WebMD, a recent study conducted by the American Journal of Preventative Medicine concluded that tracking your food intake is propitious. Victor Stevens, PhD, senior investigator at Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland reviewed over the study’s findings.

“I think the most powerful part is accountability and the next most powerful part is increasing awareness of where those extra calories are coming from,” Stevens.

Many people see tracking food as tedious and pointless, however there is credible research to back it. As Victor Stevens, it makes you more aware of your intake and moreover holds you accountable for what you are consuming.

By becoming more conscientious of what you are consuming, you will be able to indulge in sweets without feeling as guilty. Additionally by beginning to track your food intake now, you will have better tools to aid in staying on track with the difficult holiday times rapidly approaching.

SLO Skinny 2.0

Prior to the creation of SLO Skinny, the term blogger was never in my repertoire. The blog building experience has been intimidating and times overwhelming. Since this blog was first created in response to a class I am currently taking, this blog is ever evolving the more I learn.

This week, my class reviewed over SLO Skinny in an attempt to help point out some possible improvements. I am now aware of the shortcomings associated with this blog and therefore improvements are in the horizon for SLO Skinny.

For you readers, I am hopefully that you will appreciate the upcoming changes. Here’s some things you might notice differently about SLO Skinny post-critique:

  • Easy, healthy recipes will be continuously added to the “Recipes” tab.
  • SLO Skinny will feature more local hikes with varying difficulty levels.
  • Clearer blog headlines, so that readers can better know what each article will cover.
  • More pictures will accompany each blog post.

I am hopeful that this blog will evolve into a success story. I will be proactive in adding recipes I believe will entice readers. Skinnytaste is a fellow blog, which I hope to emulate with regards to the upcoming recipe posts. I will emulate Skinnytaste by posting recipes on a regular basis so that readers will have something to always look forward to.

A peer of mine has a blog which I also hope to emulate. SLOsocial‘s blog is clean, concise and informative with the happenings around San Luis Obispo. I hope to achieve the same amount of success as it by creating posts with clear, concise headings relevant to many readers.

My classmates gave positive feedback about the SLO Skinny blog. Some of the most loved aspects were:

▪   Clean layout.

▪   Easy Access.

▪   Intriguing pictures.

▪   Inspirational quotes at the end of each post.

Although there have been a few comments and likes on previous SLO Skinny posts I encourage anyone to continuously express what they like. My peers helped me realize some of the true assets SLO Skinny is currently offering.

This blog is seemingly basic, next to some of its more established counterparts. Therefore, some of the upcoming posts on SLO Skinny will offer various media elements. Video and audio aspects will accompany some of my future articles in an attempt to further enhance my stories. My hope is that each of you will continue to grow concurrently with this blog.

Each and every reader is important, therefore I want to hear from you as well! Although the criticisms from my peers at Cal Poly were incredibly helpful and enlightening, I hope that any of you readers with feedback will let me know. As I have stated previously, this blog is a constant work in progress, therefore feedback is necessary to aid in its growth and success.

As this blog grows, I am hopeful that these upcoming changes will ultimately delight the readers of SLO Skinny.

SLO…Let’s lay out the details

Sometimes it’s easier when you map things out. The city of San Luis Obispo and the surrounding areas have so much to offer that at times it can be overwhelming to decide what to pursue. Therefore this week, I decided to share a map of a few places in SLO that are must-sees. From Thursday’s Farmer’s Market to the unique Cal Poly architecture graveyard- this map will allow you to see where to find it all!

The map below lists two popular hikes in San Luis Obispo County. First and foremost, Bishop’s Peak is the quintessential hike for anyone wanting a panoramic view of Cal Poly as well as the surrounding San Luis Obispo area. The second hike is at Montana De Oro State Park. Beach lovers, this hike is for you! Montana De Oro is located near Morro Bay, an area just a few miles north of San Luis Obispo. The area has hikes along with a plethora of other features and activities, such as pristine beaches- perfect for any tourist or student to explore! If you go to the places on this map you are sure to experience some of the treasures that might have otherwise remained obscured.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”- Mark Twain

Are we there yet?

Last week I brought readers on of my favorite hikes in San Diego, Torrey Pines. This week I thought I would share my second favorite hike.

As I stated in the previous blog post “SLOcal?” Torrey Pines is for the more intermediate hiker. The hike I want to share this week is for the more experienced hiker. Mt. Woodson is located in Ramona, Ca, a north county suburb in San Diego’s inland area.

Ramona, which is closely linked to Poway, is well known for its country living, horses, rolling inland hills and mountains. The hike is more intimidating due to its considerably steep incline. A hiker could get to the top of Mt. Woodson in around an hour, allowing for few stops and a steady pace.

The top of Mt. Woodson boasts views grander than the view from Torrey Pines. The hike shows the quintessential San Diego county. 360 degree views allow the hiker to experience all of what San Diego has to offer. The immaculate coastline’s visibility along with mountain views shows the diversity of the county and the amount that it has to offer.

After arriving at the top summit of Mt. Woodson, I would encourage any hiker to explore around. The various rock formations allow a hiker to get views from different points on top of the mount. I would however caution anyone to be careful, since the rocks are sometimes tedious to get to.

Moreover, the Mt. Woodson residential neighborhood boasts a castle and a golf course. The hike itself lends it to people wanting to feel like they escaped, but knowing that there are such things as a golf course around. For any hiker attempting this hike, bring plenty of water and a protein bar because there is nothing once a hiker begins the hike.

“I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”-Michael Jordan

Although this blog is primarily focused on the happenings around San Luis Obispo, I decided to share a favorite hike of mine after a trip home to San Diego this past weekend. My father first introduced me to the Torrey Pines hike a few years ago, and now go whenever we get the chance.

Torrey Pines State Beach is located in sunny San Diego in between the beach cities of La Jolla, and Del Mar. Although the hike itself can seem intimidating, I would recommend it to any novice hiker who is looking to test out the waters. If you need more convincing, the breathtaking views of the iconic San Diego coastline will help motivate any new hiker to get to the top.

Hikers who chose to complete the trek begin at the parking lot for Torrey Pines State Beach. From there, the journey continues up a steep paved road to the beach bluffs above. Once on the bluffs, hikers weave through the trail which is peppered with caves all along the well traversed path. The hike then concludes with a rock stairwell leading to the sandy beach below.

Ultimately the hike can certainly seem challenging at times however the experience, and panoramic views account for this in spades.
